PE

Intent

Our PE Curriculum aims to ensure that PE is a positive experience for every child. We want to encourage our children to have a positive attitude towards physical activity that continues throughout their life, resulting in long-term mental and physical health benefits. We aim to develop pupils fundamental movement skills, alongside the application of those skills in individual sports and games. As well as teaching our pupils the physical skills and knowledge required by the National Curriculum, we also wish to develop pupil’s personal, social and emotional skills, collaboration, teamwork and independence within PE lessons. We recognise that pupils’ positive experiences of PE are dependent upon enthusiastic and knowledgeable teachers and so to ensure the consistency and confidence of our teachers, we have implemented the Real PE curriculum.

Implementation

The ambitious real PE curriculum enables all children to flourish and experience success throughout their primary school phase. Through a carefully planned and sequenced curriculum, which starts in EYFS, children build, revisit, and develop skills and knowledge as they progress through school, thereby developing a strong sense of self-efficacy. Real PE is a curriculum that includes:

  • Structured and progressive physical development challenges
  • Skill application opportunities that involve rules
  • Strategies and tactics that are age and stage appropriate
  • Integrated review sessions that focus on healthy participation.

These enable children to progress and know ‘how’ to get better at PE. Through core real PE and real PE foundations, children are taught fundamental movement skills. They progress through a sequence of challenges that are explored through a thematic approach in EYFS and KS1 and skill focused sessions in KS2. These skills move from simple to complex and are further developed through stories, competitions and games.

At Swanton Morley, our school benefits from an on-site swimming pool which means that all pupils across the school receive weekly swimming lessons for one half-term every year to develop their confidence and safety whilst swimming.

Pupils are encouraged to participate in a range of extra-curricular sporting opportunities including after-school clubs, in-school and out of school competitions and trips.

Impact

Real PE curriculum provides assessment checklists and supporting information to aid teachers when making termly point in time assessments of children’s progress. Within lessons, review methods, planned times for reflection and review dice, allow teachers to provide meaningful and supportive feedback to help children improve and make progress.
