KS2 Swimming Information and Achievements
Completed by: Tereza Bushby
Role: Swimming Instructor
School: Swanton Morley VC Primary
Year: 2023/24

Here are the achievements of the KS2 swimmers I have worked with over the past year.

The swimming sessions held at Swanton Morley School Pool follow the swimming guidelines set out by Swim England recommendations for the school Swimming Curriculum.

  • The sessions aim to ensure that pupils are confident and proficient swimmers over 25m or more by year 6.
  • That pupils are able to use a range of strokes effectively.
  • To enable pupils to perform safe self-rescue in different situations.
  • To understand water safety and be able to carry out some basic Life-Saving skills.

The results were achieved using a continuous swim without touching the sides or floor of the pool, and part of the swim was in deep water.

In all the awards, the swimmers performed a recognised stroke they chose at the beginning of the swim.

Throughout the swimming sessions, the pupils were taught to effectively use a range of strokes and alternate between one stroke and another, such as freestyle, back crawl, breaststroke, and butterfly.

In addition, the pupils were also taught to use a range of skills for self-survival and water competence, such as treading water, sculling headfirst, safe self-rescues such as the HELP position, and how to react safely in a water emergency situation by taking safety precautions.

The group also discuss the importance of observation and using safety information appropriately i.e. aides, flags, life rings and information in pools.

All pupils have also achieved a variety of National Plan Awards competencies of 1, 2, 3,4 and 5.

All the classes have worked really hard to achieve their awards.

Extra Information

Duke of Lancaster School

The D L School Amiga’s a booking of twice per week and consists of Sensory Swimming working in small groups or individually.
The sessions have a therapeutic approach allowing the pupils to enjoy and relax in the water whilst acknowledging and supporting their sensory processing needs.

The focus is not about achieving awards although individuals who wish to take an award are able to do so. One group did wish to have a more formal structure and achieved a variety of distance awards and National Plan water skills awards.

The groups work with large floatation aids, music, underwater hoops, ball games and building construction etc.
