Art and Design

Intent

The art curriculum at Swanton Morley, aims to encourage children to develop their creativity and develop as confident, expressive and creative beings. We want children in our school to be encouraged to develop individuality and imagination alongside an aesthetic appreciation of the world around them and experience a wide range of artists, designers and craftspeople across the world with both contemporary and traditional artists covered.

Implementation

We use the Access Art Curriculum to support our planning and delivery of high-quality art sequences of learning. Art is taught in discrete lessons, with cross-curricular links made wherever possible to themes taught within other subjects. This allows our pupils to be taught specific skills in a progressive and well-sequenced order. Skills are organised into themes of: drawing and sketchbooks, print, colour and collage, working in three dimensions, paint surface and texture and collaboration and community. These themes are then re-visited in each year group as part of a spiral curriculum to enable pupils to build on previous learning and consolidate previously taught skills.

At the end of each art sequence, we ask children to reflect on their learning process and evaluate their pieces of work to develop both their oracy and appraisal skills.

Impact

Art is assessed each term using a point in time (PIT) assessment, with pupils being constantly supported and formatively assessed during the sequence of learning through feedback.
